The share sales turnover at the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSE) registered a significant drop during the first week of trading this January 2015; but the market is better capitalized than it was In January 2014.

The share sales turnover volume dropped from Tsh. 2,196.19 million worth of shares traded during the last week of December, 2014  to a mere Tsh. 47.61 million traded during the first week of  January 2015. In the meantime, DSE data indicates the current market capitalization is Tsh 22,345 Billion, compared to 16,967 Billion in January 2014.

The DSE Market Report released during the first week of January provides an indication the Dar es Salaam stock market is a bit sleepy this January, although share prices are holding steady—with the exception of Tanzania Cigarette Company (TCC) whose share price registered a small decline.

The share sales turnover measures market liquidity and can provide an indication how easy or difficult it is to buy or sell shares at the stock market during a particular period in time. But available DSE data shows the market tends to get more active as the year progresses away from the holidays. The bigger the turnover figure during a period, the easier it is to buy or sell shares during that time.
