The Chama Cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA)  Board of Trustees member,  Muslim Haiderally Hassanali (32) has filled forms to contest  the  parliamentary seat for Ilala constituency against the incumbent member of parliament  Azan Zungu of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM). Ilala is Tanzania’s richest district and the location of  State House.

Muslim  collected his party nomination forms and returned them to Casimir Mabina, the CHADEMA Coastal Zone co-ordinator, according to one online news outlet.

“I have decided to contest [for the Ilala parliamentary seat] because Ilala has failed to get the right representative for more than 10 years,”  Muslim said after  submitting his nomination forms.

“If it is poverty [kupigika watu] in Dar es Salaam, that is Ilala Constituency, if it is chasing people in Dar es Salaam, that is Ilala constituency, if it is traffic jams, they start in Ilala constituency, if it is health problems, that is Ilala. I grew up here, I went to school in Ilala and  I know Ilala well. That is why I am contesting  [the parliamentary seat] in Ilala,” he said.

The politician said he is aware there is an arrangement for nominations to be made through the opposition coalition (UKAWA) but he decided to  declare his intentions through his party CHADEMA. He said if UKAWA will reject his application he is ready to respect that decision, and to support the candidate of the coalition’s choice.

“The era  to worship CCM, to fear it, is finished.  I will be delighted if UKAWA should endorse my name.  I ask my people in Ilala to support me. Zungu has led Ilala for  10 years;  how he led [the constituency], people know.  If he failed to defend them,  they know. Therefore they should give way to us CHADEMA  so we can bring development,” Muslim said.

“We cannot rely on CCM to have better ‘fighters’ than Chadema and UKAWA.   CCM is an institution filled with funny things. It has every kind of rot; if it is corruption, it is they who are leading. More than 35 people have come forward to contest for the presidency.  This is a group of people doing a skit performance,” he said.

The Chadema Costal Zone chairman, who is also member of  the party’s central committee,  Mabere Marando, said: “We believe  we have the best  candidate for Ilala constituency. That is why as the party’s Zonal chairman I have asked  and encouraged my relative Muslim to come forward and contest.  I trust our UKAWA coleagues will  support us and we shall win.”

Muslim was born September 29, 1983.  He joined Chadema in 2002. He is married to one wife, the online news outlet says.   He contested for the parliamentary seat in Kigoma south in 2005, setting a record as the youngest parliamentary contestant during that year’s general elections.

Others who submitted their nomination forms included Raphael Machinda who wants to contest for the position of Mchikichini Ward councillor also in Ilala constituency, and Mashiku Chokola who wants to contest for Kivukoni Ward councillor.
